Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, around 600,000 Afghan refugees have sought shelter in Pakistan, with an additional 2.2 million living there without legal recognition. Pakistan already hosts 1.32 million registered Afghan refugees who have been in the country for many years. Many of the recent arrivals are women and girls escaping threats and the loss of their rights in Afghanistan. These unregistered Afghan refugees, unable to secure legal status in Pakistan and unable to return to Afghanistan safely, constitute a growing but unrecognized aspect of the Afghan refugee crisis. Additionally, the U.S. has faced challenges in fulfilling its commitments to resettle Afghan refugees through certain programs due to policy disagreements with Pakistan, while other countries have managed to successfully relocate some Afghan refugees from Pakistan.
